Trimble (NASDAQ: TRMB), a technology solutions firm, announced its membership in the Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD) on March 11, 2024. The move aligns with Trimble’s vision of fostering ecosystems to revolutionize work methodologies. AOUSD aims to standardize the 3D ecosystem by enhancing OpenUSD, a platform created by Pixar Animation Studios. OpenUSD allows collaborative construction of animated 3D scenes suitable for large-scale film and visual effects production.

With this alliance, AOUSD promotes improved interoperability of 3D tools and data. This advancement will enable the description, composition, sharing, and simulation of extensive 3D projects. It will also foster the development of an array of collaborative 3D-driven products and services. As a member, Trimble will actively contribute to discussions on the functionality of OpenUSD and the development of new features. Their inputs will influence future specifications and directions of the OpenUSD technology stack, shaping how future virtual 3D worlds will be conceptualized and interacted with.

Trimble’s specific contributions will focus on the Alliance’s standards for digital twins and industrial digitalization in urban planning, construction, transportation, robotics and IoT. It will also provide attributed 3D data for industries such as architecture, engineering, construction and operations (AECO) and the public sector. Furthermore, Trimble plans to contribute towards artificial intelligence and machine learning use cases across various industrial applications and the visualization and optimization of large-scale real-world data.

Aviad Almagor, vice president, technology innovation at Trimble, said, “We are thrilled to join AOUSD at this early stage and to support the community’s efforts to standardize OpenUSD. Our goal is to help strengthen the OpenUSD ecosystem and democratize 3D, ensuring that all stakeholders benefit from the groundbreaking potential of sustainable and interoperable data standards.”

AOUSD’s steering committee vice chair & director of open source and standards at NVIDIA, Guy Martin, also spoke about the industry’s demand for wider adaptation and standardization of OpenUSD to ensure interoperability and collaboration across various applications. He said, “Trimble will help shape the standards that will advance 3D content generation and immersive experiences for creatives and professionals.”
